ABORTION SERVICES
Before Your Appointment
You may eat a light meal up to one hour before your appointment
(please avoid dairy products). We do ask that you make arrangements
to have someone drive you home, bring your fee in cash or credit card.
We do not accept checks or money orders.
Your Visit
Plan to be at the clinic approximately 3-4 hours, although the actual
procedure takes a few minutes.
You will be asked to complete some medical forms, then an ultrasound
will be done to determine how long you have been pregnant. An ultrasound
is a painless, very quick scan, like an x-ray, of your uterus.
Each
patient routinely receives a lab testing for anemia, Rh typing and a
pregnancy test.
Next you will meet with a staff person to learn about the procedure,
how to care for yourself after the abortion and discuss contraception.
This is a private meeting to review your medical forms and to address
any questions you might have.
We will also discuss your decision because our primary concern is your
physical and emotional well-being.
Patients who wish to begin birth control pills will receive one month's
supply unless otherwise indicated.
The Procedure
Takes only a few minutes and is a simple, safe procedure.
A female attendant will be at your side during the examination and procedure.
The physician will review your medical history and perform an examination,
and then a local anesthetic (like Novacaine at the dentist) will be
administered to numb the cervix.
Aspiration or gentle suction will be used to empty the uterus. During
the procedure most women experience some cramping. Depending on the
individual woman and the sedation it can vary from mild to a strong
menstrual type cramping.
After the procedure, patients rest in a recliner in the recovery room
and will be monitored by our nursing staff.
SEDATION
Because we know that every woman is different in her needs, tolerance
to medications and experience
we offer 3 different levels of sedation. This enables each woman to
make a choice based on her individual needs.
OUR
FEES
Basic Sedation is a combination
of local anesthetic (Novacaine) and oral Valium and Motrin.
Valium
is a muscle relaxant and most women feel slightly drowsy and relaxed
with this level of sedation.
Light Sedation is a combination
of local anesthetic (Novacaine) and an I.V. pain reducing medication.
This medication is very effective at reducing pain sensations.
Moderate Sedation is a combination
of local anesthetic (Novacaine), an I.V. pain reducing medication and
a medication that has an amnesic effect. Most women have very little
to no recall of the actual procedure.
Aftercare
Most women are able to return to daily activities the following day,
with some restrictions on strenuous activities. Every patient receives
detailed written instructions on what to expect click here for post-op
instructions.
