AFTERCARE

What to Expect After Your Procedure
Every patient receives a detailed written aftercare information sheet. Our staff also explains this information at the visit to be sure each woman understands how to care for herself.

After the procedure - it is normal to do the following:
  1. Have some cramping for a few days. Medications such as Motrin, Ibuprofen or Advil will relieve this cramping. You may also use an ice pack.

  2. Experience some vaginal bleeding. Some women have very little to no bleeding, some have spotting on and off for 2-3 weeks, while some experience a menstrual like flow. This bleeding is a healing of the uterus and each woman is different and the amount or duration of bleeding can vary. Passing clots or small amounts of tissue is also common.

  3. Expect your next normal period 4-6 weeks later and it may be heavier than normal.

  4. Feel a little tired or "down" for a few days. This most often is related to the anxiety about the abortion and the hormonal changes in your body.

  5. Pregnancy symptoms (nausea, breast tenderness) begin to go away after a few days.
Important Follow-Up Care:
  1. Take all of your medications.

  2. Follow all of our instructions and restrictions.

  3. Have a follow-up visit (free at our clinic).

  4. Use birth control, because you can become pregnant immediately after the abortion.

For the next three weeks AVOID the following:

  1. Wearing tampons (pads only)

  2. Sexual intercourse

  3. Douching

  4. Tub baths (for the first day after the abortion)

  5. Swimming

Avoiding these activities will help keep bacteria out of the vagina and prevent infection.

Call us immediately if you:

Have a temperature of 100.0 or more for 8 hours or longer.

Experience heavy bleeding- soaking through one or more full size pads in an hour.

Have severe or prolonged cramping.

We have a nurse on call 24 hours a day for emergencies and we make every reasonable effort to return your call within 30 minutes. FOR AN EMERGENCY CALL (817) 924-6641 or (800) 778-2444.

WE PREFER YOU CALL US FIRST BECAUSE WE HAVE YOUR MEDICAL INFORMATION.
